President Pohamba receives new FES Resident Representative
On 4 June H.E. Hifikepunye Pohamba, President of the Republic of Namibia received a FES delegation at State House. The FES delegation was comprised of Mr Hubert René Schillinger, outgoing FES Resident Representative, Mr Michael Schultheiss who will replace him as of 1 September, and Mr Rolf Paasch, Director of the FES Regional Media Project who will head the FES Namibia Office in an acting capacity as of 15 June. During the one-hour-meeting the Namibian Head of State and the FES delegation exchanged views on various political and other matters.

Book Launch with Prime Minister Angula
As part of a function marking the 20th anniversary of FES presence in Namibia and the visit of the future FES representative to Namibia, a new FES-sponsored publication titled “Effective Communication” was launched by the Right Honorable Prime Minister of the Republic of Namibia, Mr Nahas Angula. The author, Mr Matthew //Gowaseb was recently appointed Acting Director-G eneral of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). About one hundred invited guests attended the function at the FES office.

Benchmarks for Democratic Parliaments in Southern Africa
The Windhoek-based SADC-Parliamentary Forum has embarked on an ambitious project aimed at developing norms and standards of good practice for its member parliaments in Southern Africa. With the support of the UNDP Global Programme of Parliamentary Strengthening and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, a first consultative workshop has taken place early April in Johannesburg which resulted in a first draft document for comment and further consultation. A second workshop mainly aimed at incorporating the experience of the lusophone parliaments in the region is scheduled for June in Maputo.

20 years in Namibia
On 1 April 1989 the UN-monitored transition period towards Namibia’s independence began, leading firstly to elections for the Constituent Assembly in November 1989 and ultimately to independence in March 1990. The start of this transition was the signal for the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung to decide on the establishment of an office in Windhoek and later in the year deploy its first country representative, Mr Peter Schellschmidt. The 20th anniversary of our presence in Namibia will be commemorated through a series of public dialogue meetings and other activities throughout the year.

Youth
Leadership Development Programme 2009 launched
On 16 March 2009 the Youth Leadership Development Programme (YLDP) 2009 has been officially launched by the Governor of the Khomas Region, Ms Sophia Shaningwa in a small ceremony at the Parliamentary Restaurant. The YLDP has started in 2007 as initiative of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in partnership with the National Youth Council of Namibia. Participants of the YLDP come from the youth wings of political parties and other youth organizations.

Civil Society makes important recommendations for
ensuring free and fair elections
From 25 to 26 February 2009 civil society stakeholders,
organized in the NANGOF Trust Election Commission
(NTEC), held a consultative workshop on the “Legal
Framework for Free and Fair Elections in Namibia”.
During this consultative process NTEC has come
up with extensive recommendations compiled in the
workshop report. The workshop was held with the
financial, organizational and conceptual support
of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. It was opened
by Mr Victor Tonchi, Chairman of the Electoral
Commission of Namibia (ECN).

FES
Director for International Development Co-operation
visits Namibia
From 23 to 28 November 2008, Ms Christiane
Kesper, the recently appointed Director for International
Development Co-operation of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung
and the new Head of the FES Africa Department, Ms
Michèle Auga both attended the FES Regional Planning
Meeting Southern Africa in Windhoek. At a reception
held at the FES Namibia Office, Ms Kesper addressed
friends and partners of FES in Namibia.

President
Pohamba receives resolutions from the Namibian
youth
On 6 November 2008, a delegation of the local organizing committee for the 2nd
Namibia Political Youth Forum was received by H.E. The President of the Republic
of Namibia, Mr Hifikipunye Pohamba, at the new State House.

At this occasion the resolutions adopted at the recently held forum were presented
to the Namibian Head of State. The Namibia Political Youth Forum is a joint initiative
of the National Youth Council of Namibia and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. The
Forum is held annually.
